There are five preschools in Borgarbyggð; two in Borgarnes, one in Bifröst, one in Hvanneyri and one in Kleppjárnsreyki.
The preschools operate according to the laws and regulations applied to preschools and the school policy of Borgarbyggð. Each preschool organises and operates according to its focus areas and formulates a school curriculum which, together with the municipality’s school policy, is available on Borgarbyggð’s website
All the preschools are health oriented and follow a health policy, and majority of them are participants of the Green Flag programme.
All preschools accept children between the ages from 12 months to 6 years old. Applications for preschool accommodation can be sent in through the municipality’s service portal on the Borgarbyggður website.

Two elementary schools are operating in the municipality, in four locations. The Elementary School of Borgarnes is in Borgarnes, and the Elementary School of Borgarfjörður operates in Hvanneyri, Kleppjárnsreyki and Varmaland. These schools work according to the laws, elementary school regulations, the main curriculum of elementary schools and the local school policy of Borgarbyggð.
Borgarnes Elementary School and Borgarfjörður Elementary School are health oriented schools and participate in the Green Flag programme. Both schools operate in accordance with public health goals. The students have the option of school bus use, both in the mornings as well as at the end of school day.

Music School
Borgarfjörður Music School operates in Borgarbyggð. Teaching takes place in Borgarnes, Hvanneyri, Kleppjárnsreykj and Varmaland.
The music school takes into account the students’ interests, abilities and development. The school’s teaching methods and subjects are diverse and flexible, and can be made suitable for all age groups. All the main musical instruments are taught, in addition to the preschool department for preschool aged children and musical theatre department for elementary school students. In the year 2022 a studio facility was installed at the school, and courses are being developed where the studio is taught as an instrument. Borgarfjörður’s art school regularly hosts and leads a variety of courses in both drama and visual arts.
Enrollment into the music school typically takes place in the spring, however applications can be sent all year round. The school year itself is divided into two semesters, autumn and spring semester. Students who have been admitted into the school will keep their place until notification of change is made. The students of the music school perform on various occasions as well take part in events in Borgarbyggð and other locations.
Students pay school fees in accordance with the student rate. A 25% discount is given for the second child and a 50% discount for the third child in the family.

Borgarfjörður High School is a private high school in Borgarbyggð, where the largest shareholder is the municipality itself, however in addition there are also about 160 individuals and companies which are the founding members of the school.
The school follows untrodden paths in its practices and is in the forefront of secondary schools in both learning and teaching. At the school, the emphasis is put on formative assessment instead of traditional final exams. A special emphasis is placed on a positive lifestyle and mental health through personal service for the students.
The school’s learning and teaching methods prepare young people for the challenges of not only today but also the future.

Agricultural University of Iceland is located in Hvanneyri. The university holds a special place amongst the universities in Iceland, as it places its main focus on nature in a broad sense. That includes food safety, environmental design, planning and the protection as well as utilisation of the earth’s resources.
The University offers undergraduate and master’s studies, as well as vocational training. Both shorter or longer courses are available around the country as part of AUI’s programme of education continuation .
